DBMS access
Data dictionary
Mitrol contains a built-in data schema and integrated data definition language used to maintain the complete repository of information about :
- data, tables and files
- relations
- user programs and user profiles
- Stored definitions of virtual fields
- Stored programs
- Predefined selection criteria
- Rules for referential integrity
Integration of the schema with the Mitrol System eliminates potential data inconsistencies inherent in standalone products. It also greatly reduces the
maintenance effort by eliminating redundancy and affecting all occurences of the data with only one modification to the schema. The internal database files, allowing program access to the
structure of the database. Program compilation will cross reference fields to programs within the data dictionary, reducing the maintenance overhead and aiding documentation.
Mitrol Fourth Generation Request Language
The Mitrol language is a proven fourth generation application development language to access the Mitrol DBMS that can dramatically reduce the
programming time required to accomplish a broad spectrum of data processing tasks. With the Mitrol language, you do not have to specify
detailed procedures to perform a task. Instead, you specify the desired results, and the Mitrol System determines how to obtain them. For
example, the verb TOTALIZE uses its own structures to accumulate data items such as costs and expenses throughout a bill of material. Also,
the verb EXPLODE will walk through tree structures to print data items, such as all sub-accounts that compose a summary account. Units of measure and shop calendar are fully supported.
These powerful verbs eliminate hours of users trying to figure out report totalling and account roll-up schemes,
not to mention the potential for errors in data entry, confusion when the reporting organisation changes, and the inevitable late night links and compiles.
Eliminating the procedural portion of coding significantly improves programmer productivity and is easier
and less costly to maintain than systems written in traditional third generation programming languages. Because Mitrol applications require
less code than traditional languages, maintenance costs are correspondingly lower. In fact, Mitrol users have reported significant decreases in
application development. In a customer controlled test against Cobol/CICS/DLI Mitrol did require only 40% of chargeable resources for application and database coding.
User interface
The most important aspect of the new features of Mitrol2000, is the new user interface based on
the Client/Server architecture that was developed to allow reliable and concurrent access to a Mitrol database from a PC workstation.
This user interface consists of a unified environment that allows end-users to perform different tasks without having to switch between applications.
Therefore, through one single shell, the Mitrol Studio, users will be able to browse and open different files (batch transactions, data tables,
reports, etc....), create new ones (such as graphically drawing new transactions), or submit transaction to Mitrol by a mouse click. Once data
is received, users will be able to browse the results make a report and , export it through ODBC to another database or leave it on the file
server for other user's disposal...
Intended to make Mitrol more user friendly, this new user interface will improve the productivity of a
Mitrol user by improving the look and feel of Mitrol applications, and by reducing efforts to collect and export data.
Internet gateway
More and more popular with the public, the Intranet/Internet technology is making its way in businesses, not only for public commercial
Web sites, but also internally, as an information and productivity tool. Easier and cheaper to maintain, Intranet sites can sometimes be used as an alternative to Client/Server solutions.
In order to meet customer demands, Teamco is working on two solutions to open Mitrol to the Internet/Intranet:
First, an Internet Gateway that allows access to Mitrol database content from HTML pages, through batch transactions execution and pseudo-HTML tags. This part is completed.
Second, a Java applet capable to display graphical screens that will be used as front-end to interactive Mitrol transactions. These screens will be defined manually or using Mitrol Screen Designer.
Attached to the Mitrol2000 Client/Server architecture, these solutions provide businesses and end-users with a popular interface whilst keeping the power and flexibility of Mitrol.
